Tartan shirts are a big trend this fall/winter 2015-2016. Every high street label has one in their collection, but what is the heritage of the tartan? Before the tartan pattern was picked up by the fashion industry, it was formerly worn as a skirt, named a kilt. This kind of garment is traditionally worn by Scottish men. The tartan pattern is a part of the Scottish culture and until the middle of the nineteenth century, the highland tartans were only associated with either regions or districts. The patterns were simply different regional checked-cloth patterns, chosen by the wearer’s preference – in the same way as people nowadays choose what colors and patterns they like in their clothing, without particular reference to propriety.
In 1921 McGregor was one of the first fashion brands that made the Scottish tartan into a fashion item. The founder of McGregor started with a collection hats in tartan and that was the start of this lifestyle brand. Every season McGregor uses different tartan patterns in their collection. This season it is with a lot of grey and red colors, just like the shirt I’m wearing above. I love to combine this preppy tartan shirt with the rocking ballerina tulle skirt from Raine and to finish my look with these studded boots. It makes my outfit playful and a bit more rock and roll. What do you think?
